Mario Kart Blasts Full Speed Online, More Beta Info

Since our last update, showing extensive video footage of our latest build (at the time, now 3 builds ago), we have made great progress this weekend and have again captured video of our latest build. This is a large step forward, as we were able to successfully run Mario Kart: Double Dash full speed last night using our latest private build.

This race took place between my friend and I, from Berwyn, IL and Bloomington, IN respectively. It is important to note that this is one of the closest races we have had carrying a distance of approx 250 miles. My upload speed is 256kbps and my friend is on Earthlink DSL and capped at 128kbps. You can view the results below in the Windows Media video. Please download BitTorrent in order to download the file.

Download (requires BitTorrent):

Waluigi Stadium Full Speed (14.2 MB)

My friend was the one who captured the video, so the entire race is from his perspective, my apologies for not keeping a standard file format, as our last videos were divx. Races between Waterloo Canada and Bloomington, IN have also drastically increased in speed.

We have made many other advancements this weekend in our quest for releasing a quality beta. I'm happy to announce that a router is no longer required to use Warp Pipe. We have successfully tested the following setups with beta:

Hub/Switch Direct to Internet
NAT (DSL/Cable Router)
Two PC Network Cards
NAT + Hub/Switch
USB Cable Modem + One PC Network Card

In order to keep up to date with beta, we have a special thread in our forum dedicated to beta progress; you can check that out here.

That was incredible. Can't wait until the release!

Posted by: derek at November 24, 2003 06:36 PM

Warppipe is an event that has the ability to revolutionize Nintendo. If this does as successful as I think it is going to be, Nintendo might have to rethink their online strategy, causing a possible surge in the way Nintendo does their business. I see Warppipe as the start of something magnificant.

Posted by: Metal_Sonic53 at November 24, 2003 07:54 PM

I have to agree with the comment a previous poster stated. Warp Pipe Project has HUGE potential to become something phenomenal. Keep up all the great work guys. Can't wait to kick some butt online at Baby Park with my friends and our insane drift skill!

Posted by: ultra at November 24, 2003 10:40 PM

OMFG, that is amazing. I cannot believe that is over the net. Realease the thing already so we can go crezy and get to playing mariokart lan style across the world. Can also get to testing it on lower BW, like ma 15k/sec upload.

This will completely change the way we play with our GC

Posted by: alllping at November 24, 2003 11:11 PM

Haha, damn that was one hell of a close game. That last blue shell was one second too late. GG!

Posted by: Scyth3r at November 24, 2003 11:56 PM

Maybe I'm just drawing a blank here... "NAT" stands for what..?

Posted by: Whacka at November 25, 2003 12:13 AM

Man that was so RAD to be able to play online!! Mario Kart Rocks!! To play online even better I got have one already on my other cube so I could remove it and put it on the one on the VGA. I'm excited about Warpipe and then playing it with 1080 WOOHOO!!

Posted by: Lazerbyte at November 25, 2003 12:14 AM

I must say. That was quite amazing. Great work! I can hardly wait. Ninendo needs to offcially back this project!

Posted by: ViewtifulCris at November 25, 2003 12:26 AM

At first I thought I'm gonna need a router when the beta is released but then I read the latest news...router no longer required! I can just use my hub switch now :)

Posted by: Animekub at November 25, 2003 01:20 AM

Man this is going to be the best thing to hit once you guys finish. Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Da Intimidator at November 25, 2003 03:20 AM

Guys u gonna post a trace route of the connection u using, giving the number of hops might also be a good indicator for people.

Posted by: pv! at November 25, 2003 03:38 AM

No tracert avail at the time being. but ping averaged around 25ms.

Posted by: Chad at November 25, 2003 03:42 AM

a NAT is pretty much a router, I think it stands for Network Adress Translation/Translator.

Posted by: Azrael at November 25, 2003 08:28 AM

DD Online is going to be Great!!! Now I could play my brothers who live in other states! Thanks Warp Pipe Dev!!!

Posted by: kef at November 25, 2003 10:37 AM

Just release that beta you have already!! =D I wanna play MK:DD online!! NOW! =D You guys are great. I dont even know how you start to program something like this. I know C & Java, but one thing they never taught us in school is how to open ports and crap to get online. I would love to help if its possible.

Posted by: deemoney at November 25, 2003 02:32 PM

It looks great. Can't wait for it to be ready. Keep it up.

Posted by: Darkmaster at November 25, 2003 03:45 PM

Looks absolutely awesome! Can't believe how fast it is online! Hopefully Nintendo'll catch on and make some more LAN compatible games.

Posted by: at November 25, 2003 03:45 PM

Wow. This is going to be one of the greatest things ever. BTW, how would connect the a network card to the gamecube. Like, which spot would I plug it it to. Or do i need a seprate thing.

Posted by: beanbean29 at November 25, 2003 03:46 PM

Hey I would have to say that was like wickedly awsome. I so want to play online with my friends and other people, cause when your playing by your self, it gets kinda boring. Thats why I loved PSO. But with this I'm so excited, and 1 question...When you connect to Warppipe, will it be a random connection to a GC, or will you be able to choose who you connect to? I hope you have a choice. Thanks and keep up the great work and get that beta out soon, or heck, the full version!!!

Posted by: PuddleMonkey at November 25, 2003 04:49 PM

It really is amazing...
I was expecting nothing like this...
I had no idea the final release would be this good either.
And it would probly be even better.

Can't wait

Posted by: FishBone at November 25, 2003 06:19 PM

Ok i was just reding this on IGN and was wondering when the public will accully be able to play online. Also i would liek to know what you need to play mario kart online?

Posted by: seddrim at November 26, 2003 02:34 AM

bit torrent sucks ass

Posted by: at November 26, 2003 09:01 AM

Yeah, Warp Pipe is cool, but these guys both suck horribly at MK:DD. Seriously, just get a few Mike's Hard Lemonades in Chad (10 or so) and you're set to win. :-) Too bad I can't guarantee that kind of victory 250 miles away.

Seriously, do you guys really think Nintendo is gonna support this or take this as a cue of a direction to take the broadband adapter? Nintendo made the decision to restrict games LAN play instead of taking it to the internet for a reason, and whatever that reason is I'm sure they think they're right. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see more internet gaming on the Cube, think what Chad and friends have done is a damn good thing, and home he comes and parties with me sometime soon, but I just don't forsee Nintendo being too responsive.

Posted by: Desco at November 26, 2003 03:33 PM

Even though I've been going here for a short while, I saw a small article about this site in the Jan 2004 issue of EGM. Very Cool.

-----------As Posted by Desco-----------
Phht... Nintendo will not officially be going online with the Cube any time soon. The reason Nintendo put in LAN play is so that they can show they have the capability of going online, but are not going to. Why not? Because they have not found a way to make money on it, and for it to be profitable for Nintendo. That's what it all comes down to.
-----------------------------------------

With no one making online games, they can't come out with something like X-Box Live. Who would pay a monthly fee for a couple games? Monthly Fees per game? That won't be over with Cube Owners. And they don't make any money off of it being free.

It's too bad that they won't make a LAN Mario Party game (and why would they? They don't need split screen for it) because I would love to someday see a Mario Party game go online. But we won't see it until the next console probably and Nintendo finds a way to make some cash from it

Posted by: Astro at November 26, 2003 05:51 PM

Oops.... forgot to put in what I was quoting and did that around the wrong thing. I was responding to

"Seriously, do you guys really think Nintendo is gonna support this or take this as a cue of a direction to take the broadband adapter? Posted by: Astro at November 26, 2003 05:52 PM

Great work guys, almost makes me want to get a broadband adapter. But I can't justify paying $40 for one and not being able to choose my characters and kart when I play. That is just stupid. It's not your guys fault, I know, it's Nintendo's boneheadedness. I was really looking forward to playing Double dash online until I found out that you aren't allowed to choose which characters and kart you want to use.. Lame.

Posted by: Indigo at November 26, 2003 07:13 PM

WOW! This looks really promising. Mario Kart is great Multiplayer and the addition of online play really helps. Do you think you could find a way to get keyboard support. Being able to talk is the best part of online play.

Posted by: toadastify at November 26, 2003 09:43 PM

Holy crap! If what I'm seeing is true, you've done one hell of a job. This definenlty could turn a few heads, keep it up! Can't wait to try out beta!

Posted by: Zindura at November 26, 2003 09:54 PM

Wow,

OK, can someone point me to the step buy step list of things I need to do to get this rolling?

I have cable modem here.

Thanks,

Manesis

Posted by: Manesis at November 28, 2003 01:46 PM

Dude. Wow.
Do we need to have a Broadband or any kind of Online functioner for the GC? What do I need?

Posted by: Paravillintiniay at November 29, 2003 07:14 PM

Hey, way to go making something online for the Cube! Don't rush the release though, b/c if you guys screw this up, Nintendo might shy away from making games online even MORE, and thats the last thing any of us wants. Not to put any pressure on you or ne thing. Assuming that this is gonna work like PC online games, it should be free right? RIGHT?? Because freer is better. I heart legally free stuff.

"I think you warppipe guyz should suspend the next version-- wait till nintendo releases another LAN game -- than continue. If this sticks than nintendo will stop making LAN game. -- - - - You guys should try to be Nintendo's official online gaming guys or something - or else we wont be seeing online games for a while."

Posted by: MorNetGamez at December 7, 2003 11:37 AM

Your 100% right mornetgamez, if this happens warppipe will have no use

Posted by: yer rite at December 7, 2003 11:39 AM

haven't had time to take a look at the race yet, but the feedback and buzz from all these internet freaks is great for nintendo an online play. keep it up freak boys.

Posted by: kill-Master at December 13, 2003 09:20 AM

Posted by MorNetGamez at December 7, 2003 11:37 AM

I totally agree although i am getting a lil impatienent waiting for v1.0. I think that if nintendo sees this they will either get away from bba completely and stop making it along with all lan games, or they will jump aboard with there own online service, unless you guys at warppipe were to inquire with nintendo about making a deal :)

Posted by: Josh at December 14, 2003 09:13 PM

I was just wandering can u play the warp pipe with phantasy star online 1 and 2 or what other games out there are compatible

Posted by: roger at December 16, 2003 11:43 PM

Guys, Your doing a great job! I tested WarpPipe out on my UK PAL GC with my bud on MK:DD, and we both have Broadband u/l at 256k. It was awesome, but still not as fast as the local version.

Are you guys planning to develope an GameSpy type version of WP? Would be good to see, and also a good idea if you can play proper multi player on-line games - rather than peer to peer.

Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Benny at December 22, 2003 06:12 PM

do you have to know the i.p. of a friend, or can this program just hook you up randomly w/ someone out there who wants to play???

Posted by: jc at December 26, 2003 09:57 PM

Nintendo knew this would happen if they released LAN games. Gamespy (I think) did the same kind of thing with Xbox and it's LAN games (HALO for instance) beofre XBL! started. Here's what I think Nintendo was thinking...

Nintendo guy 1: Soo, that Xbox tunneling service is becoming quite popular, eh?
Nintendo guy 2: Yes, it has.
NG1: I have an idea! Let's only release games with a LAN feature, but without online play!
NG2: YES YES! Some independant company will make a Gamecube tunneling software!!!
NG1: YOU GOT IT! The fans will be happy, AND we won't have to run a huge server! Winners are us!

It was planned by Nintendo, they knew Warppipe or a similar program would come along, not a bad business decision I think. They sell more BBA's, get ALOT of uninformed people thinking GCN is properly online, and they don't have to put up with server maintenance. Satoru Iwata proves proper succession to Yamauchi :p

Posted by: Kurt at December 30, 2003 02:25 AM

i think u guys should join up with nintendo then actually make official products

Posted by: chris at January 1, 2004 11:47 AM

man that race was crazy... can't wait till it comes out so i can play online with other people... this online play could help nintendo because this would make people buy nintendo products... keep up the good work

Posted by: annonymous at January 2, 2004 01:00 AM

Why the *** is it in bittorrent format? Honestly, no one has bittorrent. Hell, I've never even heard of it. Next time you upload a video can you put it in a more universal format? Like Windows Media Player or Quicktime.

Haven't seen the video. But MK online sounds really cool!

Posted by: dsjfghdsa at January 2, 2004 08:45 PM

Holy crap wait someone inside warppipe lives in bloomington? Sweet! I live in Bloomington, once Smithville DSL gets me hooked up out here (a couple weeks or so) I'd love to do a race with you man. I should be getting 1.5/384, but might have to settle for 128/128. Hope not though.

Posted by: Cole at January 4, 2004 03:59 PM

Bittorrent sucks. all i want to do is watch the video, maybe i need an explanation on how to use it, but i highly doubt it. jesus christ, use quicktime.

Posted by: Dustin at January 11, 2004 09:55 PM

someone should put the video in kazaa

Yoyo! Also Leutz, macht weiter so!
