Hi-Res Videos Show Warp Pipe Progress In Action

Beta development continues, and GameCube Advanced was able to document our recent progress in a write up and a series of videos.

To supplement this, we decided to give our loyal community a chance to download six hi-res videos that really show, in great detail, the progress of our latest build. Tushar is the one capturing the video, and I am the one he is racing (my roommate joins us in the 3 player race). The same stats apply (distance, bandwidth, etc.), as they did in the initial write up, as I suggest you read it.

The videos we are offering are high resolution divx files. They are available for download through BitTorrent, a program that allows you to distribute files with bandwidth conservation in mind.

You must have the divx codec downloaded and installed, as well as a copy of BitTorrent. Once these programs have been installed, please click the links below to begin your download.

DOWNLOADS (requires BitTorrent):

Daisy Cruiser (36.6 MB)
Waluigi Stadium (37.7 MB)
Bowser's Castle (57.0 MB)
Luigi Circuit (27.7 MB)
Wario Colosseum (40.0 MB)
DK Mountain (37.2 MB)

Note: We realize there are issues with the audio in each of the videos. This is a result of the compression process and do not reflect the sound of actual game play.

<<< update that side panel, Mario Kart DD has already been released "Mario Kart: Double Dash! (11/17/03)" and thx for the vids =)

I published two more files available for download on our homepage via BitTorrent that include Bowser’s Castle and Waluigi Stadium.

In the Waluigi Stadium video, we are playing a four player race, but with only 3 available people. Tushar had his extra controller plugged in, and as you will notice, he races with the other character towards the end of the race. On the other end is myself and my roommate.

In the Bowser’s Castle video, we are playing in co-op mode, which is very fun. Tushar controlled one kart with two controllers on his end, and my roommate and I controlled the other.

I just posted the last of our hi-res videos which show the status of our latest build. This one, Daisy Cruiser, does a good job of showing co-op mode. 2 players on each cube. Enjoy! Also, note there are audio synching issues, we are aware of that and it was caused in the encoding process.

Guys, you're doing excellent work. Making the program closed source is not a bad thing, as long as we don't have to pay to use it. Anyway, keep up the good work, i'm very excited with Warp Pipe. Will future versions of Warp Pipe support a DSL connection with an upload bandwidth of 128k and with a download bandwidth of 640k? Thanks.

Posted by: George at November 22, 2003 04:37 AM

Hi George,
I was running at a connection that's around 118 kbps. You can see that we were having quite a few great games at those speeds.
Nathan is working on improving things and that should help you out with the game speeds.

Posted by: Tushar at November 22, 2003 04:41 AM

FFS! I mailed you guys about that my site can host the program but I haven't recieved any answers. Look in the mailbox from the submit form.

Posted by: Stan64 at November 22, 2003 10:34 PM

Wow. I'm very impressed by this so far. What I love is, even though it's slightly slower than normal, that it's consistant (the most important part of a racing game). Speaking as a member of the IGN Boards, and as an IGN Insider, I am very interested in this. I am thinking of starting a chat function where everyone meets in a chat room prior to and after matches of MK:DD. I'm considering AIM a prerequisite, or perhaps simplify it further and meet on a Yahoo! chatroom. As for my hardware, I am all prepared. BBA in place, router already set to the ports required for Warppipe to function, and even a microphone for my computer for possible future voice chats. I grow more excited each day about this project, especially upon viewing results like these. Keep up the good work.

I have saw the videos and I am very excited with this project, I wish you the best with this.

I think this is super if they do get it working. To load a program on your PC and it will look for others with the same program and make it think the other computers are on your LAN and then can play MirioKart or any other LAN game over the WWW. I think Nintendo did this LAN know some one would make a program to have LAN over WWW. Not like Phantasy Star Online they don't want all to pay for ever new online game. That would kill online gameing. I have 2 game cubes here and 2 MarioKart's I can tell you it works so good over the LAN! It would be super to play others all over the world!

Thank you for doing this, for free too!

Awesome stuff guys. I'm really excited. You guys are doing some great work and I appreciate the fact that you want to bring a great game like Mario Kart into the online world. Keep up the good work and those movies made my anticiption go from 'ok' to 'too much to bare'

Posted by: MavGunloc at November 23, 2003 02:26 PM

Wow, nice work guys! You are doing an excellent job here, and even at this beta stage I can see that this is going to work out just fine :).

Just one thing; In Holland we got the crappiest connections on the face of the Earth it appears. I'm getting the fastest connection in the whole of the Nehterlands, and that's a 8012kps down 512 kps up connection. Could you guys post a definition of what you call "home cable or DSL"? Cause with a maximum upload of 64kb/sec I'm not sure if I'm ever going to play vs. my friends with somewhat slower connections....

Posted by: Darkdemon at November 23, 2003 04:18 PM

Do you guys think it will be available by thanx giving. If not what about xmas?

Posted by: Jesse Hinojosa at November 23, 2003 10:33 PM

any other ways to get the videos? i have AIM, can some1 send them to me?

Posted by: max at November 24, 2003 12:02 AM

HA! I love in the daisy cruiser video, when you guys start honking at each other. i should start doing that in my games.

my computer doesn't seem to like playing those videos, i've gotten blue screens (which is weird because I'm on XP) computer freezes or just wmp saying it needs to close. the pitch of the audio seems to go up and down too, but i guess you know that. i've managed to watch some of them at least once through without too many problems. i don't have very much ram so that might be a problem.

Really great to see a project like this. Always nice to see the community pick up the slack. Can't wait!

Posted by: Sean at November 25, 2003 05:11 PM

OK, I'm really jazzed about this project, but I'm not to excited about installing this BitTorrent nonsense on my machine in order to see the videos. Here's something from their FAQ's page "BitTorrent makes my machine blue screen! What should I do?". Their suggestion is to upgrade your drivers, my suggestion is to NOT INSTALL THIS MESS!

I hate BitTorrent

Posted by: NORDS at December 8, 2003 10:11 AM

why cant we have these files as good old fashioned mpg? That bitTorent is useless.

Posted by: stephane at December 21, 2003 04:06 PM

d it won't download man... why can't you just host it??

Posted by: at December 24, 2003 09:19 AM

Really. Whats the deal with this BitTorrent crap? It's not working for me. What was wrong with the traditional way of uploading and hosting movies? With mpg's or avi's?

Posted by: dsfdsf at January 2, 2004 08:54 PM

with bittorrent stuff this site's traffic isn't used but that of the bittorrent seeders - so that this site can stay online at low cost - very nice from the site owners point of view - look someone *has* to pay for every site and so the more essential stuff (like the source code/binaries of the program itself) can be kept online at low cost (that's just my humble opinion but I think I might be quite right ;-) )
