Mario Kart: Double Dash!! has been shipped to the United States and people who have preordered it should start receiving their copies tonight, although most major retailers will not have the game on store shelves until Wednesday, November 19th. Rest assured the Warp Pipe team (Nathan, Tushar, Matthew, and myself) are working very hard in order to bring you a quality beta release that will allow people on residential cable and DSL connections to play Mario Kart: Double Dash!!. This release will support either a router setup or a setup that involves having 2 NIC (network interface cards, or Ethernet adapters) in your computer and will be released before the end of the year.
Currently, we have been able to link 3 GameCubes together and play some races with the latest private build of Warp Pipe and Mario Kart: Double Dash (JPN). Mind you, our lead developer, Nathan, is on dial up and our latest build was able to sustain his latent connection while both Tushar and I were on standard DSL connections. Also, for those who are curious about distance, Tushar resides in Waterloo, Canada, while I reside in Bloomington, Indiana, and Nathan resides on the east coast of the US. We have documented the races here, where you are more than welcome to find out more of the specifics.
Nathan is currently in the process of trying out several of our optimization theories while Tushar is working on the 1.0 server, as well as the 1.0 windows client while Matt looks forward to releasing our first OSX build (when beta is released), and is also working on the 1.0 OSX client. To clear up misconceptions, our first beta release will feature the basic functionality that alpha has. While Nathan stabilizes the daemon (the core component which will make the game run smoothly over the internet) the other half of the team is working on a feature rich client (1.0) that will be made available shortly after the completion of our last beta release (early 2004). We look forward to bringing you more specific updates as they come available.
When will the release be ready for us to play online? Great Job guys!
Posted by: Brandon at November 17, 2003 03:03 PMI already have the game for a week and finished it completely. It's a cool game and I hope to be able to play it online. Posted by: N-Freak at November 17, 2003 03:49 PMIs it possible to play with the GC hooked up to a laptop that accesses a wireless network?
Posted by: Chad at November 17, 2003 04:54 PMWill there be rpm releases? Will there atleast be binaries so us linux users can compile your wonderous software?

The GC must plug directly into the router.
Posted by: at November 17, 2003 06:35 PMhey insted of having 2 network interface cards, can you have 1 network interface card and 1 USB Port.
because i only have 1 Ethernet adapter, and 2 usb ports, and i could hook up the Ethernet adapter to my gamecube's BBA, and my PC to the DSL box with the usb cable, would it work?
Posted by: MarioMan3 at November 17, 2003 06:49 PMYeah, I tried to plug in my GCN to my iMac with the airport card to see if the GCN can connect to the internet. I tried PSO, and it couldn't see it. I'm seeing still if I can pull it off.
When does the beta release? > >
Posted by: Ster at November 17, 2003 07:56 PMJUST GOT TO SAY...THANKS!!! Im looking forward to the mac and linux releases. As for xlink, they can drink my "neon green" piss and get x tattoos on therethumbs. Oh wait nevermind Im being immature.

--Does this mean it WON'T work with MK:DD? I think now I am more confused...
Posted by: Ryan at November 18, 2003 01:52 AMYou should use wxWindows ( http://wxWindows.org ) for the GUI to create a platform independent client... It would be so much easier. (And wxWindows looks really great on all platforms and is easy to develop with)

Posted by: Barna at November 18, 2003 05:30 AMHey Chad,

Hey Chad,
Once again, keep up the good work, can't wait to see this all in action. If I have a USB ADSL Modem, will I still need a router. To take my GameCube online, I network it with my PC and connect through an RJ45 Crossover Cable. Will I still need a router and Hub to use your software. Im no expert on PC's so any help is greatly apprieciated.
Thanks in Advance,
Smug
Ster, you commented on hooking up PSO through your iMac and it wouldn't work.
I've used PSO attached to an iBook talking to an Airport station which in turn is attached to the cable modem and gotten it to work.
Just might be a configuration issue. If you want to know more, let me know.
Looking forward to trying this out!
(Matt, if you need any help with the OSX port, code or UI, I'd be happy to lend a hand.)

Posted by: Prax at November 18, 2003 04:17 PMOk, I have the game, I have the broadband adapter, I have the broadband, and I will be hooking it up to my cube soon.

Greetings MKDD Bretheren!! I look forward to taking first place against each of you in some friendly MKDD competition. I am confused on why Nintendo would offer LAN Play without online capability. It does not seem convenient at all, regardless of the capability. I would like to know how I can find the current alpha software so I can play Kirby AirRide online. Depending on the skill level of you Jedi, I would like to team up with someone with equal skillset so that we can conquer the globe!! Lets Do This!! WarPipe Team... YOU ROCK!! Thanks for coming up with this solution. mailto:jtr95@comcast.net
Posted by: Bruh-Man at November 19, 2003 08:46 AMWould be able to link the cube to a PC connected to the net via a crossover cable to play online?
This is all exciting stuff, keep it up guys!
Posted by: Martin Crickett at November 19, 2003 10:12 AMjust wanna clear this up in my head...
how would i set this up? i have a router, pc, gcn, (and ill get a bba soon)...
Posted by: max at November 19, 2003 03:36 PMI just wanted to express my gratitude to you guys at warppipe.com! Us gamecubers have been waiting to go online for quite some time now, and it's about time someone decided to step up and make it happen for us! Thank you so much! And to all you who wanna play a game when the BETA is released, my aol name is RSO 81! Look me up when Beta is released, so that we can play! Take care, and to the warp-pipe crew....THANKS AGAIN! You guys are awesome!
Posted by: RSO 81 at November 19, 2003 04:49 PMContinue your great job and dont giv up! :P
Thats all :)
Suggestion... If I was going to have any target date in mind for the BETA release... I would keep prior to 12/25/03 in mind. You just know there are plenty that will be receiving MKDD as a stocking stuffer. It would definitely, make a good impression.
P.S. 150cc flower cup........AAAAARRRGGGHHH!!! I stayed up till about 3:am.. and STILL can't get first place.. Star CUP was a cake walk compared to flower cup. I have unlocked everything else though.
Posted by: Bruh Man at November 20, 2003 04:04 PMWell, today I had my first LAN experience with MK:DD. I linked to another gamecube and tried out 8-player co-op....HOLY MOLY!!! It was great!! Now I really can't wait to play online with you all.
By the way...I beat all cups, Mushroom through Special, on all three classes. After you finish that, you have to go through something called ALL CUP on all three classes. It's basically racing ALL 16 tracks as one cup. So far I've beaten ALL CUP for 50cc...100cc soon to come. Take care all, and to those folks over at Warppipe.com, thanks again. You guys are awesome!!!
-Ryan
ive just been introduced to the whole warppipe project so ill apologise for my ignorance, but what exactly do you need for lan play? as its advertised by nintendo on the box as a feature i thought that they would have provided all the peripherals for linking GCN's up but i cant find any beyond the broadband adaptor. help please?
Posted by: will at November 21, 2003 05:20 AMNintendo is just kicking themselves in the ass. Not providing the appropriate stuff for these types of games, SPECIALLY with the Holidays coming up, there are sure going to be losing some cash! We GC lovers are still lucky to have these type of people who are willing to take things a step a head ... man, YOU WARPPIPE GUYS ROCK!!!!! when the program is finally release... if you want to play, my AIM SN is Norjeilo
Posted by: Iran at November 21, 2003 09:03 AMplease give me a gamecube with Mario Kart
I have a magazine and i will publice you(warp pipe).
I will do a review about you r magazine.
thank you
Posted by: tomas at November 21, 2003 10:20 AMman some of you guys are just so funny. Give me a gamecube. Geez. Yeah right. Get a life, like these guys have money to spend to just hand gamecubes out to poor kids who can't afford it just so they can get some free advertising, like they care about that anyways. Go get a paper route or something.
Posted by: Exile at November 21, 2003 09:03 PMI finished the game completely too and look forward to kickin everyone's @$$ online...if someone could please drop me an email that has taken this game online already without warp pipe i would appreciate it.
i love MK:DD! hahah i just got special tracks unlocked today.
does the Warp pipe stuff work in Europe too?! cuz i havnt seen any option for LAN matches in the menus :'(
