Testers Needed!

We are ready to start testing our project on the linux platform. Once stable the project will be ported over to windows and Mac osx. Until then, we would like to test and work out any problems in the linux codebase.

Requirements: All linux testers will need the following.
1) An AMD or Intel based linux box running on the same network as your GameCube.
2) GameCube
3) Copy of Kirby Air Ride (JPN)
4) Nintendo GameCube BroadBand adapter
5) BroadBand Connection
6) Instant Messanger of any kind (YIM, AIM, ICQ, or MSN).

It is very important that the GameCube and the linux box reside on the same LAN. For instance, if you have a wireless LAN setup running at 11Mbps and your GameCube is connected via a wireless bridge and your linux box is connected to your router via standard 10/100Mbps ethernet connection; it won't work. Unlike the solution a few Japanese gamers came up with, we do not require you to purchase an extra ethernet adapter for your PC or a cross over cable. You just need to make sure your PC and GameCube are running on the same network.

Meet The Requirements?
Do you meet these requirements and you want to become a tester? Simply fill out our contact page and let us know your Instant Messanger screenname and service, as well as your availability to test.

god I really hope this won't always be the case! The only way I can play my Cube online is wirelessly.

Don't worry. As long as both your PC and Cube are connected to the wireless LAN, there won't be a problem.

Like I said earlier, our solution offers the most flexibility by not making you restricted to having your console connected directly to your PC. All we are saying is that your cube and your PC must be on the same LAN. Either wireless OR standard eithernet, they can't be on seperate networks.

Same ethernet, eh? I don't run linux myself, but all the machines on the network in the CS department at my university run Red Hat Linux. Would I, in theory, be able to plug my GameCube into the ethernet at the dorm and run the utility on the remote linux machine while logged in from my WinXP PC?

my gc is connecting to my pc through the second lan card (i guess it's the same setting of the jp's solution). will it support by your own solution? more, so far from your research, how fast of the connection is required to have a reasonable performance? (both upload and download speed).
lastly, what is your target? 60fps?

I've been excited about this project since I
heard about it last month. If this thing is able to run games at 60fps it would be a HUUUUUGE gaming break through and would end up influencing nintendo's sales.

Wow, I meet all of those requirements except for having Kirby (I'd need a freeloader too) and a linux box. I could always install Linux on a virtual PC on my computher though. Does anyone know where I can import Kirby and get a freeloader?

Thanks! Now if only I can convince my mom that we need the game early...

I am considering importing this game, just to be able to help, but I would like to know how import-friendly it is before I buy it. I don't want to get a game I can't enjoy because I can't understand it.

no updates in a while. How's it going?

I have all but the linux box if you are still needing people to test with. If you are and can recament a good version of linux (compatible for dell laptops) that wont screw over my xp then let me know.

Brian: Red Hat is a very good distro that I used for a very long time on a dual boot system with windows xp. I highly recommend it. Nice system, easy to install, and comes with ethereal and whatever other software the project would need. Although you might want to consider just using Knoppix, as I think it comes with the necessary software and it is a complete distro that just boots off a cd.

Hope this helps!

Thanks joe. I got a copy of Knoppix and sent an email saying I am willing to help for testing.

I might switch over to red hat once I get more comfortable with linux.

I have a few quick questions.

1) Does each person need to run the program for it to work, or just the host?

2) How do firewalls affect it? Does just the host need to have a hole in their firewall, or does everyone? I'm just wondering how this affects college students stuck behind their school's network.

I know it's early days for this kind of question yet, but what kind of internet connection speed are we looking at needing? Also, will this be simply a tunneling software (like Aquaduct), or will it be a gamefinder as well (like XBconnect and GameSpy Arcade)?

Is this project still alive? I've been watching it since it started a couple months ago. I hope you guys haven't given up!!! I know A LOT of people would be interested in any progress you've made.

Why do we need Linux to test out this?

Come Mario Kart, I would love to test out the networking capabilities of this program with my PC that is running Windows XP.

Cause I saw that this will work on Win XP soon, and I should have Mario Kart, but I'm not getting Kirby.

Posted by: AnujSuper9 at October 29, 2003 06:20 AM

I will be getting the European (PAL) version of mario kart, have a router, 512k connection and am more than willing to help out once the windows code is being tested
