It has been awhile since we've last updated with news. We have had many successful tests of our software and we look forward to having more beta testers as we bring the game up to full 60fps of online play and then port over to Windows.
Keep checking back for updates, we'll have more shortly.
Posted by Chad at September 12, 2003 06:52 AMYES!!!!!!!! GOOD JOB...but ive got a lot of questions :p how good is the current performance? :p is it stable...omg are u gonna do this with all lan games? or just a select few or just kirby? is it easy to set up? How much money would i need to spend to get online with cube and kirby?
Posted by: Dark Cube at September 13, 2003 03:03 PMCan't you be a bit more specific? Do you think the project is going to succeed?
Posted by: piet at September 14, 2003 05:48 AMHopefully it'll work with all LAN games, assuming the LAN games use the same protocols and ports and whatever.
How much money would i need to spend to get online with cube and kirby?
Well, you'd have to spend $34.90 or whatever the price is for a Broadband Adapter (if you don't already have it that is), and $50 for the game. The software itself is free, it's open source...ish... I think. Note: I am not involved with the project in anyway, wait for official answers. But I'd assume that these are correct.
Posted by: Satoshi at September 14, 2003 03:32 PMso how many fps is the project upto at the moment???
Posted by: pn at September 14, 2003 07:44 PMIt's been a while since I've checked in on this, seems our schedules are pretty synched up. :p
Anyway, good to hear you've had some successful tests. I can't help you with testing since I don't have either the game or the BBA, but I'll be sure to help out once MK comes out. :)
Posted by: mattcoz at September 15, 2003 09:40 PMI would be willing to help beta-test MK when it comes out as well. Since I live in Europe I will be able to get the game before it is released in the US.
Posted by: metroidprimefusion at September 17, 2003 09:39 AMYea, once Mario Kart comes out, I, too, would be interested in beta testing.
Posted by: Satoshi at September 20, 2003 12:02 AMI would be very interested in helping as soon as I get the game in the middle of october.
Posted by: Jono at September 20, 2003 03:38 PMCoswald! It's you!
Anyway, be sure to do this with Super Monkey Ball 3 and Mario Kart! That's all I really care about.
Posted by: fdjklfafa at September 21, 2003 03:27 PMdont know if youve covered this and ive missed it but do i have to have my gamecube connected straight to pc via ethernet or can i connect it to a router?
Posted by: magrappy at September 21, 2003 04:54 PMi'll help too!!!!!!
Posted by: Adam McMahon at September 22, 2003 12:50 PMwhen mario kart comes out. i think i would buy a brandband addition to my gamecube just for this
Posted by: at September 22, 2003 12:51 PMI'm hoping you get up to speed with xbconnect or any of the other Xbox tunneling programs...
You need more people helping....
Posted by: Neo at September 23, 2003 04:56 AMSince Chad's a bit slow on updating this (he's back in school) and the dev team never seems to post here, I figured I'd mention a couple things. I talked with Chad on the 13th or so and he told me that they're at around 20fps. He may get pissed at me giving the details, but.. wtf.. it's hard for me to get ahold of him, so maybe this'll get a reaction. ;-)
The software is intended to be free and from the research he did, should work with more than just Kirby Air Ride, but it's possible that other companies will use different methods for their LAN play. It's probably fairly safe to say that both MK:DD and KAR will use the same technique. I think the real question will be, do both games spew out the same amount of data on the LAN and will a certain amount of optimizations that allow Kirby to run at a full 60fps also allow MK:DD to do the same... only time will tell.
If you're wondering who I am, I'm the guy with the other cube and copy of KAR that chad took the pictures of (the cube, not me), when we were determining what kind of network traffic was being generated. I also did the quick little vid cap of the game in motion.
later
Mike
PS.. CHAD... FREAKIN UPDATE THE SITE MORE OFTEN.
Posted by: kargath at September 23, 2003 09:35 AMhey kargath thanks for the info i can sleep at night now : p glad to see its coming along so great! and ya...chad update the site lol...maybee u should make a new one......
Posted by: Dark Cube at September 23, 2003 06:50 PMwell if optimisation for KAR doesn't work for MK:DD surely you could find someway of getting that optimisation in file format, then release specific game optimisation files separatly? so say the regular software would run both games @ about 20 fps, and with the correct file loaded up runs at the full 60 fps? personally i think most ppl would be happy with 30 fps, if the program is released at the slower rate and then optimisation takes place later. at any rate, it can't do any harm can it? it'll give ppl the option of 20 fps games online.
Posted by: at September 24, 2003 12:18 PMI would like to start helping on porting over to Mac OS X, if and when you do need help. If this is "opensource", you will be providing the source for us, right? I would like to take a look at it. :)
Posted by: Totakeke at September 28, 2003 12:53 AMif you have a program that runs, why not release the code you have now? that is the plan eventually anyway isn't it, releasing the code?
Posted by: at September 29, 2003 04:23 AMum, I don't know if I should say this or not, but the US version of Kirby's Air Ride is comming around the corner just about no, I hope the warp pipe project changes from the Japanise version too the american version, if they have to work on compatiblite issues!!!
Posted by: unkwon at October 2, 2003 10:20 PMThere shouldn't be compatibility issues, seeing as how it's the same game, just in a different language. The net traffic and protocols should still be the same.
Posted by: Satoshi at October 3, 2003 01:44 PMAlmost a month since September 12, and no word...
What is happening?
Posted by: at October 4, 2003 07:13 AMI wish I knew..
Posted by: Totakeke at October 4, 2003 09:17 PMI am almost 'dependig' on this to work ghehe.
All these promises (or not) that gamespy is dealing with it (or not) is making me go crazy. I hope this all is out when Fzero reaches the stores here in Holland (Lan supported) the 31st of October... Can't w8 cause I already have 4 guys that want to try this out with me :P
Posted by: Kusanagi at October 7, 2003 01:25 PMF-zero isn't lan compatible, that feature was left out to move the focus more on single player.
Posted by: at October 7, 2003 02:08 PMIndeed, if Japan and the U.S. didn't get LAN, why would the developers put it back in for Europe? Hopefully, however, the next F-Zero will have LAN support.
Posted by: Satoshi at October 8, 2003 09:55 AMLAN can't be put 'back in' for europe, simply because it never was in! it was just an idea being thrown around at design and they decided to concentrate on the single player mode. I imagine the next version will likely have lan and wan compatibility
Posted by: at October 8, 2003 10:32 AMWell, I thought that it was in, but they took it out or something. Sorry for being misinformed.
Posted by: Satoshi at October 8, 2003 02:39 PMinexcusable, you should know! ;) no it was going around the net as a rumour it was in, and that turned into a 'fact' that i can find, the official stuff i can find says they sat down and the idea popped up and was then shot down :D
the same rumours that said LAN was in F-Zero said the AX GX connectivity was being scrapped in europe, which it isn't, altho the connectivity won't be as well supported, but then thats to be expected!
We're about due for a monthly status update here. With Kirby coming out here in the states next week (October 14th/15th) I'm sure there's a lot of us itching to know if we should start hunting down a BBA and pick up this game.
Posted by: T-Money at October 9, 2003 10:51 AMhaha your all wrong F-ZERO DID HAVE LAN AT E3!!! its qouted on ign by sega and miyamoto they simpley didnt show it off at E3 because they wanted to focus more on Mario karts abilitys and since mario karts lan options where more complete
Posted by: Dark Cube at October 9, 2003 06:18 PMok so has this project been scrapped or are there just a select few who have the code? is there a GUI? Is it still Linux only? I know once Double Dash hits EVVVVVERYONE will be wanting to test online play.
Posted by: Joel at October 9, 2003 07:31 PMdark cube, got a link to that article?
basically if they had LAN up and running theres no reason to take it out, they would have left it in as an extra, even if it wasn't very well supported, and neither the japanese nor american versions have LAN.
those 2 facts lead me to believe what I have seen in hard print in an interview.
CUBE magazine, issue 24, page 21, interview with toshihiro nagoshi
"TN: Well actually we didn't seriously review the option (of networking) but we talked about that kind of possibility and in the end I concluded that there were a lot more things that I really wanted to accomplish with the game. Even without the networking capability F-Zero GX would turn out to be a fantastic game"
Posted by: at October 10, 2003 04:44 AM"Even without the networking capability F-Zero GX would turn out to be a fantastic game"
And it did =P
I plan on getting Kirby's Air Ride around Christmas (my mom says we have too many games, and won't let us get any new ones 'til Christmas...), so I really hope that this is out by then. Actually, it should be out before Mario Kart comes out, but oh well.
Posted by: Satoshi at October 11, 2003 09:20 AMAnybody here wana start a forum or webpage dedicated to this project? thats a little more livley then this page :p lets get the word out people!
Posted by: at October 11, 2003 02:23 PMHi, I'm MK Omega, I'm the webmaster of projecthyrule.com
Anyway, I just found your website today. Glad to find you guys, you guys rock...
Anyway, I made this post at my site when I heard about your site but didn't know where it was...
http://www.projecthyrule.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=4935
I want to help. I have all the tools we need...
I have a Nintendo Gamecube, the Nintendo Gamecube Broadband Modem, Ethernet Cable, Broadband Internet access, and a computer, and an Action Replay...
Now, I do not have Kirby's Air Ride, and no offence I probably won't pick up a copy, however, I am madly in love with Mario Kart... I will 100% be getting the English Version which comes out next month in the US around November 11th...
I am a programmer for what it's worth, but I still have much to learn. I am totally into your project and I really want in. Like I said, I can't be much help with Kirby's Air Ride, but come November, I will be ready and willing to do all the beta testing you guys need for Mario Kart Double Dash!!...
So, can I help?
Also, if you guys want/need a chatroom, I could set one up for you guys, if you're interested...
I hope to hear back from you, and thanks again for doing this, I've wanted an online Mario Kart for years and now's our chance!
-MK Omega
Posted by: MK Omega at October 11, 2003 02:26 PMThat would be great to have a message board. But does anybody know the status of the project? Is it still going on or have it been scrapped?
Posted by: Joel at October 12, 2003 11:01 AMhmm source forge page hasn't got posts in the foum for 2 months and no files have been released, so it doesn't look good does it? doubt they even got it up to 20 fps if cos they don't have files up
Posted by: mat at October 12, 2003 11:26 AMhey Omega...i posted and told you about this place in GCdemos.com :p hehe if you read the messages one guy posts and says theyve got it up at 20 fps so they have that going. im gonna email one of these guys and ask em hows it going
Hey guys - keep up the great work. Hopefully we can get Mario Kart to go online, that would be so awesome! Peace...
Posted by: Troopa at October 12, 2003 08:48 PMYou guys were just mentioned on Mario Kart Central, a significant Mario Kart site, so it would be expedient for you to give us another update...
I have been following you since you were mentioned on Slashdot. I fully plan on getting Mario Kart: DD when it comes out, but whether I get the broadband adaptor is dependant on whether there is quality online support for it. My hope is to see the online gameplay as smooth as that of Quake 3. So please don't let me down!
Posted by: Clomer at October 12, 2003 09:59 PMthey're obviously stuck at whatever frame rate they're at now, so I wouldn't hold my breath if i was one of you guys. also its quite probable they changed the communication between cubes in mariokart to enable more cubes to talk at once, so even if they get kirby working I doubt it will port easily to mk the way they seem to be making it
Posted by: at October 13, 2003 04:40 AMI just got kirby air ride...came in today.
Posted by: bob at October 13, 2003 01:47 PMI really hope the Warp Pipe Project comes through!
Posted by: Chris Byrne at October 13, 2003 02:13 PMI would also be willing to test this project once Mario Kart is released. I am assuming that a router is also needed... Sorry, I am no computer expert!
Posted by: mahovlich at October 13, 2003 02:32 PMI've been looking for information on this but cant find any. Now that Kirby Air Ride is out I want to get it, if it means playing online.
Posted by: Jasp at October 13, 2003 05:47 PMI hope this works, Kirby comes out this week, and I have a bba ready. I don't know too many people here who will play Kirby with me, I'm the only one I know who enjoyed the Jap version when I had the chance to play it. Good luck guys and don't forget the mac os x version! :)
Posted by: Kokiri Kory at October 13, 2003 06:30 PMSprry, I am not going to test, I got to buy $50 worth of rope, I mean wire, adapters (because I do not have ethernet), and of course the broadband adapter. So I am just going to wait until this is finalised!
Posted by: at October 20, 2003 09:40 PMA person never tells you anything until contradicted.
