Information For Testers

I have an inbox flooded with messages from people who are interested in testing out our software, but are unaware on how to go about it. As it stands now, we have one software release. This release is version 0.1 of our alpha and is linux only. For those of you who have linux, below are the requirements to test the alpha release.

LINUX TESTING REQUIREMENTS

1) GameCube Broadband Adapter
2) GameCube with Kirby Air Ride (USA or JPN)
3) Router
4) PC running Linux
5) Broadband Connection (Cable, DSL, etc.)
6) WarpPipe Software

Notes: The router must be directly connected to both your Linux PC and your GameCube. You must also find someone else willing to test with you. If you meet these requirements and you are interested in testing with someone, I suggest you post in the comments in order to find others who are willing to test. Furthermore, all operating and compliling instructions are available with the release of our software. If you have any further questions, please feel free to email me.

As stated earlier, we are currently in the process of porting the code over to libpcap so we can release our beta in OSX, Linux, and Windows. This beta will also show a significant performance increase from the alpha. Big thanks to Nate, our lead developer, as he has been working hard to make sure that we release our beta in time for Mario Kart: Double Dash.

Way to go guys! I greatly look forward to the Windows Port of the program. I will totally be there to test the !@#$ out of this for Mario Kart Double Dash!!

You guys rock, thank you SO much for doing this =)

When you have a windows version and I have Mario Kart in my hands, I will test test test all nite long... I have one question. Do I really need a router? I don't have a router... If I need one I can go buy one though... I do have a Cable Modem that can use both Ethernet Port and USB Port for what it's worth... Do I still need that Router? If I do, what's a good brand to buy?

Yes, you need a router. Any router you find at best buy will do the trick. I'm a fan of linksys myself, but whatever you find at Best Buy or Circuit City will be fine. Make sure you get a router and not a hub.

I've got a router, a broadband adapter, the U.S. version of Kirby, ethernet cables. Just one problem... I don't have Linux. :( Mac OS X. My friend told me I can compile the source in OS X, he tried walking me through it (I know nothing of programming), but all attempts failed (probably due to my ignorance) :D

Will it run on boot-from-CD Linux, like Knoppix (Debian kernel)?
If I just put the software on a floppy it should run just fine, right?

I have everything else all set and ready to test, including a fresh copy of Kirby.
My DSL gets about 60ms on the west coast and 90ms on the east. Anyone located near Denver would be choice, though.

I too, shall be ready to test when Mario Kart is released. However, since you have no Windows port, I am going to start on my own. I would very much like to take a look at your Windows version when you get to that point. I have just recently come into the possession of a second GameCube and I will begin soon and continue as I have time. If possible, more updates will be greatly appreciated by all. Just one more month; I can't hardly stand the wait!

Will the final product...
1) be capable with mac?
2) have any form of chat support?

Posted by: uphu at October 19, 2003 11:21 AM

Arghh It sounds so awesome, except I don't have Linux. :(

Well keep up the good work I suppose...

Posted by: MajinGet at October 19, 2003 11:43 AM

It is coming out for Windows later, read you dumb@$$!

Posted by: uphu at October 19, 2003 12:41 PM

Phanasty Star did not work with AOL but will this?

Posted by: uphu at October 19, 2003 03:44 PM

I read from Gamespy that it will not work to bring the GameCube online so keep working and thanks so much!!!!

Posted by: uphu at October 19, 2003 05:56 PM

I don't see any reason it would not work for AOL, you just need broadband internet service...

Posted by: Kokiri Kory at October 19, 2003 07:49 PM

Phantasy Star Online did not work with the dial-up version of America Online, but it did work with their broadband service (a.k.a. Roadrunner). This will not work with AOL dial-up, because Mario Kart: Double Dash!! only supports the Broadband Adapter.

Hey, you guys are getting recognition from gamespy. Chck it out http://www.gamespy.com/bizbuzz/october03/bizbuzz88/

Posted by: Paulmolive at October 20, 2003 04:23 PM

This will be free, right?

Posted by: uphu at October 20, 2003 06:42 PM

I think everyone appreciates what you are doing for all GameCube users dying for online gaming. I hope the project is a huge success and wish all of you the best of luck!

Posted by: Byrne at October 20, 2003 09:08 PM

I was hoping i could use my ethernet port to hook up my cube to pc, and my USB port to hook up my PC to my DSL (like i do with xbox), but it looks like i need a router or whatever.

well there be alpha testing for windows anytime soon?

Posted by: Alex at October 20, 2003 09:19 PM

This is going to be absolutely AWESOME!
Never give up on this project guys, you will have a HUGE support base accross the globe!

Also, will it be possible for you guys to open up some proper forums ? :D

Posted by: GoDGuY at October 20, 2003 09:34 PM

advance wars online anyone? :)

Posted by: Animex-Shadow at October 20, 2003 09:45 PM

pacman vs online? O_O O_O

Posted by: Animex-Shadow at October 20, 2003 09:49 PM

Advance wars online? Too much waiting but maby they could because of the new chunk box (GBA player)you put under the GC.

So do I just need to plug my broadband adapter into the back of my PC via ethernet cable?

My reason for asking is that with PSO online you plug directly to the modem. Please say I plug directly to the computer, I have no slot for ethernet on my DSL modem.

Posted by: at October 20, 2003 10:04 PM

What is the difference between a router and a modem?

I have a modem do I need both?

Posted by: at October 20, 2003 10:13 PM

Couldn't you set up a free Phansasy Star Online network? Of course, people could easily hack because the memory is on your own card not some mother card at the company. :(

Posted by: at October 20, 2003 10:35 PM

It hasn't been tested yet, but the daemon might work if your cube is hooked directly to your PC (make sure your using a cross-over cable) and your broadband modem is hooked up via USB. I think it all comes down to wether the ethernet gets seen as the first adapter by the daemon. right now there's no way to select what adapter it sniffs cube packets on. But i'll definitely make a note of that for the future.

A piece of news: The win32 version is almost ready for release. Keep an eye out.

Chad, you should ask someone to set up a forums section but this is fine I geuss. I like not having to log in or sign up.

Posted by: at October 20, 2003 11:41 PM

Nm, forums are up!

No, since PSO isn't playable on the LAN, this wouldn't work. Besides, we still need to figure out how the PSO servers are run so we can make our own.

Posted by: Satoshi at October 25, 2003 11:06 PM

Damn i have a Hub and not a Router :(

Posted by: at October 28, 2003 09:37 PM

what is Linux anyway

Posted by: Richard M at October 29, 2003 03:17 PM

Wow, way to go guys. Nice initiative. Is a shame Nintendo don't beleive in online support for the games, while gamers are so eager to play online. Please include Mac support for your final product!!!

Posted by: GalloMarrueco at October 29, 2003 04:41 PM

you guys are REALLY AWESOME, I am really looking forward to play MKDD online.

Posted by: robert at November 4, 2003 05:24 PM
